Rent the Runway

I have been a member of Rent the Runway since it opened, but hadn't yet used the service until this past weekend for a wedding. I was all set to rent this fabulous dress...who can name what movie this dress was featured in?

Well last Monday I received a call that one of the sizes I ordered (they allow you to choose your regular size, and then go up or down one size, for free!) came back from the last renter completely ruined. So I had to choose another dress to receive in case the other size did not fit.  Since it was just a few days before they were to send the dress, the selection was limited. I ended up selecting the dress below, which I ended up really loving! It was a difficult decision on which to wear to the wedding. I contemplated a wardrobe change for the reception, but didn't want to take away from the bride, so I decided against it.

All in all it was a good experience and I would likely use the service again. Have you tried it out? How was your experience?

Fashion Watch: VMA Awards

There was a lot of talk about Selena Gomez's dress choice last night at the VMAs. Many thought her provocative threads were too sexy for the 19 year old, but I completely disagree. I don't think it was over the top at all. I loved her gown - the high and low - so chic! It could have been a little gothy, but she pulled it off flawlessly.

Another standout was Zoe Saldana. I loved the different textures in her dress. It's hard to see in the photo below, but it's made of leather, tweed and sequins. She's also rocking some killer Balenciaga heels.

PS. How amazing was Britney's tribute? I really hope the rumors of her retirement aren't true...

Inspiration Board

At the beginning of each season, I sit down with all the pages I’ve torn from magazines and deem which ones make the cut for my inspiration board. Most pages include outfits I like, new nail polish colors, famed beauty products, and fabulous accessories. I get so much inspiration from reading mags and I sometimes end up with half the mag ripped apart!

Whenever I’m putting together an outfit for a night out I always check out my inspiration board to see what pieces I may want to incorporate. It’s also helpful to look over before a shopping trip, to see what items I may want to pick up.

Do you have a similar board? What do you find inspiration in?

Fashion Icon: Frances Bean Cobain

The daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love is all grown up - and looking fierce! She did a racy rock-n-roll shoot with photographer Hedi Slimane and a more demure shoot with Rocky Schenck. Cobain hasn't shown up on the fashion circuit formally, but if these photos are any indication of what's to come, she certainly has the look of a budding fashion icon.

Style Me Chic: Laptop Bag

Reader Michele is looking for a new laptop bag. She travels 18 days out of the month, so she needs something functional, even though she would prefer fashionable. Her primary request was that it have wheels. She also prefers a black or charcoal color, but followed up by saying she'd be interested in a more edgy feel. There are a couple of options below in red, which I would highly suggest to give it a little more style. Over the past few years she has had a variety of Tumi bags, so I did not review those options, as she is aware of their collection.

(also available in red and green)

(also available in red

(also available in red)

The functional bags I found were not the most stylish, so I added in a few more, just in case she ever decided to want two options!

(also available in black and multicolor)
Prada Nylon

While this is not specific to carrying a laptop, it certainly is the perfect size and I love the look!

Lady Gaga + Barney's New York

This holiday season Gaga's Workshop will be set on the 5th floor (men's shop) of Barney's New York on Madison Avenue. The workshop is set to debut in mid-November and I cannot wait to see what they come up with. I will be in the city for Thanksgiving and Barney's is always on my list of stores to shop! It's also been reported that Gaga will design small gift items to be sold in the workshop, with proceeds going to charity.

I Exercise in Heels

A few weeks ago I headed to the Kennedy Center to see Wicked with some girlfriends. We all dressed up a la SATC, had dinner in the city and had a fabulous evening! Please note the heels I was wearing that night:

Since Wicked was sold out, the crowd was massive, which means elevator rides were scarce. Sooooo, we walked up and down what seemed like thousands of flights of stairs. The next day my thighs were so sore you would have thought I ran a marathon! Needless to say, next time I need a workout, I’m just going to walk up and down the stairs in my platforms.

B by Brian Atwood

Expensive shoe addicts, listen up! Brian Atwood has launched a bridge line (read: lower-priced), with prices ranging from $275-$995. Atwood stated that he wanted the line to be "more downtown and less red carpet." The collection will have four collections each year, and the first is available for pre-order now. Here are some of my faves...

*ps. is anyone else having trouble with shopstyle posting longer spreads, like the one below??

Nordys in NYC?

Well kind of...

Nordstrom is set to open its doors on Friday in SoHo, but not under their namesake. treasure & bond will be the alias used as Nordy's tests the waters in NYC, some speculate. Not only will the Nordstrom name be absent, but so will the look and feel. It is funkier, and as the website says, "part gift boutique, part art gallery and part neighborhood gathering place." The shop will offer unique items such as custom hats from Satya Twena, authentic vintage glasses, and jewelery from Akong, as well as childrens clothing and houseware. It will also have some familiar brands such as James Perse and Vince. Also worth noting, all profits will be donated to organizations that benefit children in NYC.

Guess just what got added to the list for my next trip? Can't wait to check this new concept out!

Style Me Chic: Back to School

Reader Jennine is looking for advice on style for fall fashion. As a college student, she is on a budget, but is willing to pay £100 for good quality pieces to make an outfit. She describes herself as boho chic and likes the style of Mary Kate and Ashley Olson, Sienna Miller and Rachel Bilson. Below are the looks I put together for her. Click on any picture for more information.
